Alec Baldwin’s “Filipino Mail Order Bride” Controversy
May 15th, 2009
Alec Baldwin is involved in this controversy on dropping the words,”Filipino mail-order bride,” when Letterman was talking to him about having more babies in the May 12 episode. A lot of sensitive Filipinos have reacted to this phrase.
Alec Baldwin…while it is true that Filipino mail-order brides exist, alongside every other nationality, it is not really the most appropriate for anyone to drop words like that. We all know what happened to that episode of Desperate Housewives belittling Filipino medical practitioners. And more recently a Chinese journalist’s calling the Philippines, a country of slaves.
But then again, we can just leave the guy alone. Obviously an aspiring candidate for the next national election like Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr. is using this to call attention towards himself (read: self promotion). You have a point, all right. You could have just asked for an apology and tell him that was out of line but drop a threat the Hollywood actor who is an a show, that is not exactly a serious or documentary type of show? Are you kidding me? Maybe you think so low of Filipino people to not see right through you. The David Letterman Show is supposed to be a light hearted one, if you have not noticed. Jokes are thrown here and there.
Why should Filipinos overreact? Just give your piece of mind and get over it. It’s true, anyway. The Philippines does supply the world with mail-order brides, but that does not define what a country is. A lot of other countries are also known for rubbish stuff like this. Move on. And Mr. Baldwin, please just apologize, – the world has enough troubles of its own.
